The Construction and Rearticulation of Race in a Post-Racial America ReviewThis book provides an excellent contextualization for navigating the delicate contours of race in America, particularly pertaining to how blacks have been treated physically and psychologically by the dominant white (mostly male) culture that has and continues to dominate all facets of American society. The book also delves into the relationships amongst blacks from former civil rights leaders, to film directors, to hip hop legends. It challenges the reader to interrogate their own views on issues pertaining to race, but more importantly to investigate where they originate from. At a time when America is cloaked in a self-adulatory frenzy over the recent election of Sen. Obama, Dr. Metzler's book reminds us that race in America is not an issue that can or should be transcended. Rather he invites the reader to reconsider the premise that a "color blind" society is the ideal that America should be striving to attain. This book goes a long way towards opening an honest discussion on the effects of the vitriolic imagery of blacks, particularly black men, that have been infused into the American zeitgeist. A frame of reference that has been created and recreated through centuries of repression, brutalization, and psychological conditioning targeted directly at blacks by the dominate culture. The Negro Problem of 2008 is helped along willingly by blacks whose sense of inferiority and internalized oppression so blind them that they too deal in oppressive and denigrating images for profits.
